Syreeta Hector is a dance artist and educator in Toronto, Ontario. As a highly accomplished performer, Syreeta has worked for internationally recognized companies like Citadel + Compagnie, Toronto Dance Theatre, and Danny Grossman Dance Company. She has collaborated with independent companies such as Political Movement, Shannon Litzenberger Dance Projects, and Fauxhemian Films. Syreeta is a graduate of the The National Ballet School’s Teacher Training Program, The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, and achieved her Master of Arts in Dance Studies from York University.
As a recipient of both Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council grants, she has studied dance extensively in New York City, as well as undergone research creation projects. Currently she is working on a new creation called, "Black Ballerina," which focuses on the dualities within ones identity, along with her blackness and indigeneity in relationship to classical ballet. This solo will be part of the Summerworks Lab Series, and will be shown in the Bright Nights Performing Arts Series at the Citadel: Ross Centre for Dance. Most recently, Syreeta has accepted the Research and Development Award from The Stratford Festival and will be one of the RBC Emerging Artists in Residence at Canadian Stage. She will also be undergoing a residency with the Kaaitheatre in Brussels, Belgium in order to extend, "Black Ballerina."
In addition to her creative work, Syreeta is an adjunct faculty member in the dance department at York University. Here, she teaches modern technique which includes both dance studio and classroom activity.
